State aid gave boost to 2018

In the month of February March, Långå Fiskevårdsförening will report the financial statements for 2018. From this it will be possible to read that sales of fishing licenses decreased significantly due to the dry and hot summer. The decline is taken by the board as a welcome sign that fishermen themselves have realized and heeded the appeal to refrain from fishing out of concern for the fish which had an extremely difficult situation with high water temperatures and lower oxygen levels in the water.

The biggest investment last year was in the Långåljusnan project. The project means that the consequences of waterway cleaning and power extraction are mitigated through biotope measures that must ge fish and aquatic organisms a better habitat. This means that the river channel is restored with boulders and gravel that were there before.

– Simply put, this means that we make the upper parts of the Långåljusnan a little "longer" with bends and curves, we increase the oxygen content using level differences, the fish are attracted to migrate in directed currents and regain places where they can rest, eat and reproduce, says Helge Jonsson, chairman of Långåfisket.

We even increase the volume of water by creating deep burrows that better withstand dry periods and where the fish can seek shelter. It is needed in view of the climate threats we are beginning to see, he says.

Långåfisket's total investment in Långåljusnan last year amounts to approx 800 000 SEK. In addition to the fishing association's own funds and village funds, has been set up by the state through the County Board and Havs- and the Water Authority with half a million from the grant for restoration of stream water in Jämtland County 2018.

– That addition was absolutely crucial so that the project could be upgraded and get a more extensive start than we had calculated with, says Helge Jonsson. In addition to the co-financing, the county board's water unit in Östersund provided expertise that has ensured the quality of the implementation and relieved the project of a lot of work that would otherwise have been spent on applications, permission and formality.
