2018 was tough for the fish and fewer fishing but unique year for Långåljusnan

A first, preliminary compilation of the fishing year 2018, show that sales of fishing permits in Långåfisket fell by almost 20 %. The decrease is entirely of the hot, dry summer, and, comparable fiskevårdsområden, has virtually the same experience. The decline in sales obviously affects the economic freedom of action for long FVOF, but can still be an important signal to fishermen refrained from fishing days to spare the beleaguered fish.

– The heat and drought have forced down the fish in deep burrows where they were standing and 'gasping for breath' in hot water, says Helge Jonsson. When the first rains came late in the summer they could return to their stalls seats, but there was a 'pantry' empty after dehydration. After all, they did reasonably well and we did not fish kills in our waters within lengthy fiskevårdsområde, he says. In long follow up the effects of the hot and dry summer to see what effects it may have had.

– The consequences of climate change are difficult to handle and it is only marginal measures possible, says Helge Jonsson. To Långåfiskets great efforts to try to restore parts of Långåljusnan for fleet headed clearance and force deployments is an interesting project even seen from a climate perspective.

Efforts Långåljusnan project is the largest effort made last year with a view to restoring habitats and conditions that the fish had once. Clearances for timber floating and power expansions meant dramatic changes that have been very damaging to fish and thus for fishing.

Helgi Jonsson made a proposal to the Board for long FVOF in January 2015 and despite limited resources, it was decided to launch the initiative. Långåfiskets quality manager, Per-Ola Persson, inventoried entire river stretch, analyzed the situation and took appropriate habitat measures for increased power production, oxygenating, beds for spawning gravel and other measures for fish and benthic organisms.

The project aroused the interest of the provincial government, Härjedalen, Anglers and long FVOF managed to get financing on the road. It also allocated bygdemedel and long FVOF could invest its own reserve funds. After this summer's work, a third of the distance corrected. The project will continue as planned and with the same funding for 2019 and will be completed 2020 when also connecting tributaries should have been fixed.
