Consultation begins on measures in Långåljusnan

The experience of completed restoration measures in Långåljusnan's stream sections downstream of Lossendammen is good and justifies similar measures downstream of Långå Kraftverk. The stretches of stream that have been restored to sustainable biotopes provide fish and other aquatic organisms with good conditions for the natural reproduction of the local strain of Ljusnanöring. with recreated features reminiscent of the Ljusnan before fleet line clean-ups and power expansion.

Preliminary assessment is that ecosystems for biological diversity with an original species richness of living organisms are now developing in the streams upstream of the tunnel discharge from the power plant and that the increased volume of water with deep holes mitigates climate consequences.

Inventories completed in the summer 2022 shows that parts of the section downstream of the tunnel outlet can be restored to an approximately equivalent degree in the distinctive conditions that locally apply there. These measures would have great significance for living conditions and natural reproduction of above all trout and grayling, but also for others, native fish species. In addition, the consequences of rapidly regulated power production are mitigated, which during the same day can vary the flow from dry year to spring flood downstream of the tunnel discharge from Långå power plant. The water masses from the regulating reservoirs in Lossen and Grundsjöarna are combined there for hydropower production with extreme stress on all aquatic organisms as a result.

The measures just west of Långå village, in the white flour section – Middle sneer, would also lead to another kilometer of interesting sport fishing and contribute to the need to spread fishing pressure within the fisheries management area.

The current measures involve returning boulders and masses after clearing waterways and restoring streams and rapids for fish migration and oxygenation as well as creating playgrounds for natural reproduction of trout and grayling. Deep holes and hiding places are formed where the fish can seek out at greatly varied water levels.

The measures are of such scope that an environmental permit and the consent of the property owners concerned are required. Contacts with landowners have been initiated. The application for environmental consultation is with the county administrative board.

The project is costed to 200 000 SEK. The County Administrative Board has decided that 150 000 kroner of the power industry's construction funds may be used for the implementation. The rest is financed by Långå FVOF.
