Fishing or not fishing is the question right now.

The suns on the weather map are now so dense that it is almost impossible to land a fly between them. It is a nice summer for those who like warmth in contrast to the cold water-loving noble fishermen in the Långå fish conservation area. Water temperatures are approaching risky levels! Several fisheries conservation areas further north close sport fishing as a precautionary measure. What happens to Långåfisket?

– The fisheries management plan for Långå FVO always contains updated contingency plans for situations that in some way threaten fish and fishing, says Helge Jonsson, who is chairman of the board. We are prepared with immediate action at all times, he says.

Långåfisket's contingency plan is kept up to date at all times for the protection of fish and other aquatic organisms. Supervision, observations and attention to conditions that may affect fishing form the basis for decisions that can be made and implemented immediately if necessary. The board can make a decision within an hour! Periodically, restrictions can be introduced of varying degrees that are adapted to the situation and threat picture. Introduced measures do not entitle to a refund of fees paid.

– The experiences from the summer 2018 is frightening and is an experience that will unfortunately be repeated with increasing climate change. Dealing with the consequences of a warmer climate is an impossible challenge in many respects. For our cold water-dependent precious fish, the warming is a direct threat, which also develops faster in the mountain range than in the rest of the country, says Helge Jonsson.

But within the Långå fisheries conservation area, the board has made foresighted investments in connection with the Långåljusnan project, as they have restored the power lines after raft joint cleaning and at the same time increased the water volume despite the power expansion. This means, among other things, that deep holes have been dug along the shadow sides of the river to dampen warming and prevent dehydration..

– Hot water and drying out of bottoms are serious threats. The effects of the hot summer 2018 entailed obvious injuries. We feared fish death, but it did not occur, on the other hand, the fauna and flora of the waters in the form of insects and aquatic plants were affected, which in itself is serious as they are the fishermen's pantry. Nature has an admirable ability to repair itself, but if the problems are repeated, they can lead to exhaustion of production capacity, says Helge Jonsson.

Do not advise against fishing?

– No, I absolutely do not, partly because we know we can trust the angler's good judgment. There are responsible people who fish in Härjedalen. Of course, the knowledge varies, but there is a concern that supports and guides among those who meet along the shores. The experience of a fishing trip includes more than the fishing itself. Preserving and caring is part of and is part of a good conscience.
